The inspiration for this piece originates from Leo E. Osborne’s home island of Guemes, in the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington. On the west beach, there once stood a Samish Indian village where the tribe fished for the greatly honored salmon. It was here, while gathering colored stones that Leo’s imagination was sparked by the dream of the salmon woman.
The woman would fill her vessel with salmon colored stones and journey from her village to the shore. Singing to the salmon, she would lure them to her and, leaving the stones upon the beach as her offering, she would fill her vessel with fish and return home. We, in turn, joyfully find her dreams upon the shore, gather them to ourselves and return home. It is from this lore and the artist’s guiding hands that Salmon Woman Dream takes form.
