More About Simon Kenevan

Simon Kenevan was born in London on the 9th of September, 1963, to artist parents Maggie Weston and Peter Priston. Simon was later raised in Dorset by Frank Kenevan, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and love, where his independent nature was encouraged and his spirit allowed to grow freely. Simon's life revolved around the beaches and the sea, where he spent as much time as possible fishing, rowing, beachcombing, or simply just 'being'.

Despite an apparent 'gift', Simon's only formal art training was the inspired tuition in draughtsmanship and perspective from Mr. Neame at Bournemouth School for Boys. Upon leaving school at 16 in 1979 he embarked on a string of occupations, always working outside, keen to throw off the shackles of institutionalized education.

In 1995, Simon and his partner established the Possi Gallery and Possi Shop in Castle Cary, Somerset, England, which in 1996 was voted 'Best New Business' by Britain's Fine Art Trade Guild. The Possi Gallery has attracted over the years such artists as Phillip Meninsky, Mackenzie Thorpe, Henty Knighton Hammond, Simon Bull, Rosemary Trestini, Shirley Borokhov, and others. As a company, Possi has won many awards in recognition of its innovation, and its value and contribution to the community, including HRH Prince of Wales' Gold Medal for Excellence.

No longer involved with Possi, Simon now paints from his studio near Atlanta, Georgia, and from his coast side studio in rural England. Since 1998, Simon has worked almost exclusively in pastel. Smaller works can be made 'en situ', working fast, while the larger paintings are produced in the studio from watercolour sketches and photographs. Simon is moved by the symbolism of space, and paints predominantly land, sea and skyscapes finding inspiration everywhere he goes. So long as there is a sky, he'll find a painting. Simon Kenevan’s works are to be found in collections throughout the world, both corporate and private, including the offices of HRH Prince of Wales.

The common factor is light. We all yearn it and seek it out when it is absent from our lives. Even in our darkest hour the faintest glimmer of light, a ray of hope, is enough to strengthen the soul, yet we all possess it, deep inside. I believe that people find light, and hope, within my paintings.
