EAGLE SONG STORY
By
Leo E. Osborne
In 2007 I was requested by an island neighbor and friend Anne Casperson to consider sculpting a memorial sculpture for her departed husband and LIFEMATE Capt. Gary Lynn Casperson who died in November of 2006 after several years battling cancer. He was of special interest to us because not only as a friend and neighbor of this island he was also a captain of the ferry ‘Guemes’ that takes us to and from Guemes Island. Gary was indeed loved by this island!
This was not a simple request and it struck my heart to think of such an overwhelming possibility…. and so the process began.
In the weeks to follow it was decided upon by Anne and myself that the most perfect symbolic image of their affection and unconditional love for each other was the pair of bald eagles that have nested young for many years in a large snag cedar on the cliff of their property overlooking the channel.
Yes, it was the unconditional love that so illumined this couple as they embraced life on Guemes Island in the San Juan Archipelago of Washington. Anne and Gary were childhood sweethearts and through their magical life created their own ‘castle’ upon the cliffs of this island, reflections and dreams from their young and lifelong romance. The sculpture began with a 7 inch study modeled in clay and is now a bronze limited edition titled MORNING SONG.
The final memorial piece EAGLE SONG is 24 inches and this is its story. The two eagles are joined together as if coming from one source as indeed they are ONE in creation. One bird has its head thrown back and is singing its melodious song and the other mate with head back is preening the crown feathers of its beloved. Of interest, Anne is a vocalist in the Schola Antiquae Eocis Choir, singing Gregorian Chants and Prolifany.
The bird pair have their outer wings rounded at the shoulders and draping forward and down in front to form the shape of a heart with the wing tips enfolding together as they meet.
The back of the sculpture shows the wing of the preening bird wrapped around the back of the singing bird forming another heart shape at that place of connection. It is noteworthy that talking later with Anne I found that she is a follower of the Sufi Tradition and the symbol of Sufism is the heart being carried on wings. Evidentially my own inner consciousness was aware of that!
There is also a pair of eagles that reside in the marshland near Milkwood Studio and it is this pair that awakens Jane and me many mornings with their song of beauty. That is the reason for the title of the smaller sculpture.
This sculptures form and this story about its coming into being has had great influence on the immediate popularity of this piece.
